Energy-Saving Tips You Can Do Yourself
Back to BlogYou may have the most energy efficient heating and cooling system in your Macon, GA, home. However, if you haven’t looked into other ways to increase your home’s energy efficiency, you could be missing out on some big energy savings. We would like to offer you some easy energy-saving tips that you can do yourself.
Tip #1 – Beware of the Energy Vampires!
Think about all the electronic devices that you own that all require recharging. If you are like most people, you may have several chargers plugged into electrical outlets throughout your home for convenience. What you may not realize though is if you leave those chargers plugged in when not in use, they continue to draw energy. Unplug those chargers, or even better, plug them into power strips that you can just flip off when done charging.
Your electronic appliances may be Energy Star rated, but if they are like most, they power down into a standby mode that continues to draw a reduced amount of power. Your television and cable box is one of the biggest offenders of pulling energy when not in use. A good idea is to plug your electronics into a surge-protecting smart power strip that turns off power to devices that are not in use.
Consider replacing the older appliances in your home. You can save a lot of money on your energy bills by upgrading to a more energy efficient dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, or oven. Be sure to compare EnergyGuide labels when shopping to see an estimate of your yearly energy costs for the appliance before buying.
Tip #2 – Change Out Your Light Bulbs
As you know, the light bulbs we have grown up with have been phased out and replaced with more energy efficient bulbs. Most of these new bulbs are fluorescent and do provide energy savings, but choosing LED bulbs; instead, can provide you with even more savings.
There are other benefits to installing LED bulbs. In addition to saving energy, you will not need to replace LED bulbs for several years. This type of lighting also provides a more natural appearing light than many fluorescent bulbs do.
Tip # 3 – Don’t Forget Your Heating and Cooling System
You may call us to provide preventive maintenance for your furnace and air conditioner every year, but there are things you can do to increase its efficiency throughout the year. The most important thing you can do is make sure that you clean or change your air filters every month. This will keep the optimal amount of air flowing through your system and keep it as energy efficient as possible.
By raising the temperature on your thermostat when cooling your home, you can save more money on your cooling costs for each degree raised. The same is true for each degree lowered when heating your home. Consider having Conditioned Air, Inc. install a programmable thermostat in your home to see even more savings!
